America's heart is heavy today. Last night, three US service members were killed and several others injured during an unmanned aerial drone attack on our forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border. While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we do know that it was carried out by radical pro-Iranian militias operating in Syria and Iraq.
I join our families and friends—and Americans across the country—in grieving the loss of these warriors in this despicable and completely unjustified attack. These service members are our nation's finest: unwavering in their bravery. Unflinching in their duty. Our allies and partners with whom we stand in the fight against terrorism, unwavering in their commitment to our country—risking their own safety for the safety of their fellow Americans. A struggle we will not stop.
The three American service members we lost were patriots in the highest sense. Our nation will never forget their ultimate sacrifice. Together, we will uphold the sacred duty we bear to their families. Let us strive to be worthy of their honor and valour. We will continue their commitment to fight terrorism. And no doubt – we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a way we choose.
