KCCI viewers shared dozens of photos of the rare blue supermoon, which was 5% closer to Earth than normal, making it appear much bigger and brighter than it actually is. Wednesday night is the closest full moon of the year — 222,043 miles or so away. That’s 100 miles closer than the August 1 supermoon. The first supermoon of 2023 will be in July and the other on August 1. The last time two full supermoons in the same month graced the sky was in 2018. That won’t happen again until 2037, according to Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi, founder of the Virtual Telescope project. The fourth and final one will be in September.
