Outside the red carpet, there is a group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered Note Israel’s continued killings in Gaza. One protester’s sign read: “Killing children cannot be justified.”

As with past red carpets there were fewer pins or other outward signs of Palestinian support, and there were still a few — Reservation Dogs actor Dallas Goldtooth wore a red Artists4 Ceasefire pin.

Baby Reindeer , the deeply unsettling story of tonight’s top limited series favorite Stocking, has been a much-needed boon to Netflix, though not without controversy. Fiona Harvey, the woman who says she inspired Jessica Cunning’s Martha, has filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix, claiming defamation, negligence and emotional distress.

Although it never explicitly links her to Martha, the show, which Netflix says is a “true story,” exaggerates her relationship with writer-star Richard Cott, who Harvey says denies sending him 41,000 emails, hundreds of voicemails and 106 letters. Godd, for his part, filed court documents detailing Harvey’s “stalking, harassment, abuse and threats” between 2014 and 2017, which fueled his comedy show and later the series.

Not that the legal mess will make a difference tonight – Gunning is the favorite for supporting actress, while Godd looks set to take home at least the writing award.

For the first time ever, we’re getting two Emmys in one year, which was inevitable, but the inevitable outcome of last year’s strikes made the fallout of the Emmys possible. Here’s an update on what happened in January:

Awards predictions are a fool’s errand, but I persisted in trying to guess who would win (and shout who would win). TL;DR: It’s going to be a big night for Shogun, and another comedy sweep for The Bear.

The show hasn’t even started yet, and already Shogun is a big winner — with 14 wins at the Creative Arts Emmys last week, surpassing John Adams (13 in 2008) and the record for most Emmys in a single season of TV for best in the game. of the throne (12 in 2015, 2016 and 2019).

Suffice it to say that FX’s adaptation of the James Clavel novel is the favorite for best drama, making it the first non-English-language show to win the night’s biggest award (and the second nominated since Squid Game in 2022). And its nominated stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were the first Japanese nominees in their category; In 2007 Masi Oga was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Heroes and is the only TV Academy nod.

A few weeks before an important election, one would expect some talk that would nod towards it, but the producers have confirmed that nothing in their control will be political tonight.

“We’re celebrating television, and we’re immersed every day in all the different ideas that surround the election. We want it to be a celebratory night,” said executive producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay. Deadline. “We hope everyone will do the right thing, but we don’t know what people are going to say in their speeches. This is a very important election year that will determine all of our futures. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes.

Producers are promising the “power of nostalgia” we saw tonight at the January festival with some big reunions and cameos. Tonight we’ll see surviving cast members from Happy Days, The West Wing and Saturday Night Live celebrating their 50th anniversary.

For understandable reasons, a Friends reunion has been confirmed not to be part of the evening despite its 30th anniversary, while the stage will also include troupes of TV characters such as iconic mums, lawyers, villains and cops.

Selena Gomez is here! The Only Murders in the Building star earned Emilia Perez a Best Actress award at Cannes (shared with co-stars Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon), along with her first solo acting nod for the show’s third season.

Tonight’s murders are the only nominations, and Gomez, an executive producer, is the most-nominated Latino producer for comedy in Emmy history.

Is the bear a joke? Yes, yes it is, according to the TV Academy. According to the Guardian’s Stuart tradition (and most of Twitter) no, no it really isn’t:

Jamie Lee Curtis poses with her Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for The Bear during night two of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 8, 2024 in Los Angeles. Photo: Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP

As usual, the Emmys split the awards into two ceremonies (a real blessing for those of us), which meant that last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys, we started to get an idea of what this year’s show might look like in favor of the Academy.

Tonight’s ceremony will be hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, whose comedy Shit’s Creek finally saw some TV Academy love in its final season when it won nine Emmys. As with that show, we can expect a bit of ambiguity from the pair, who have been told they’ll behave badly.

In a Los Angeles Times profile, Eugene Levy said: “It always strikes me as funny when jokes are made at the expense of the nominees — they’re on the job, it’s their night, and really, you have to have enough respect for the awards. Otherwise, why are we here?

Dan Levy added: “From what I’ve been told, people are excited that we’re not hard comics and that there’s a kind of warmth to the room.”

So expect three hours of this:

Welcome (again) to the Emmys

No, you’re not hallucinating — the Emmys are back! Nine months after the 2023 ceremony in January, the Emmys return to their regular September slot to celebrate the 2023-2024 season, with (mostly) new nominees.

The end of Emmys juggernaut Succession (RIP) opens the door for a new heavyweight drama — FX’s ambitious historical epic Shogun , set in 1600s Japan, entering the night with 25 nominations, the most of any show. With 14 Creative Arts Emmys already, Shogun competes with The Morning Show, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Slow Horse, 3 Body Problem, The Gilded Age, Fallout and former Emmys favorite The Crown.

Another FX production, The Bear, nearly won the comedy awards in January and led the category with 23 nominations, despite its dubious record as a comedy. It faces stiff competition from fellow Emmy darlings Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows and the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Among limited series, HBO’s True Detective: Night Country leads the way with 19 nominations, though the buzz is in favor of Netflix’s breakout hit Baby Reindeer.

The night was full of heartfelt speeches and another round of TV nostalgia – stay tuned for all the highlights!
