PARIS – US Open champion Coco Gough will be America’s female flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, joining four-time NBA champion LeBron James, Team USA said Wednesday.
Goff, 20, was the first American tennis player to carry the flag, three years after she was forced to miss the Tokyo Olympics when she tested positive for COVID.
“Never in a million years did I think I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA at the Opening Ceremony,” Goff said in a statement.
“I couldn’t be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our commitment and passion on the biggest stage.”
Gough and James earned their selection by a vote of their fellow American athletes, according to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
“To be nominated by your teammates for this honor speaks volumes about the way Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA,” said USOPC CEO Sarah Hirschland.
The tennis world No. 2, Goff burst onto the international scene five years ago when he made a dream run to the Wimbledon fourth round at the age of 15.
He won his first major title at the US Open last year.
Goff is expected to compete in both singles and doubles on clay at Roland Garros. The Olympic tennis tournament begins on Saturday.
