Chiefs vs. Super Bowl 2024 Live updates from the 49ers

The Kansas City Chiefs became the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions in two decades by defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl LVII in Las Vegas.

In a back-and-forth game, both teams were tied at 19 runs at the end of the game.

The Niners scored first, taking a 3–0 lead early in the second quarter on kicker Jake Moody's 55-yard field goal, which briefly set the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history.

They extended their lead to 10-0 with a double-pass trick play with five minutes to play in the second quarter. Niners quarterback Brock Purdy returned the ball to wide receiver Javon Jennings, who then threw it across the field to Christian McCaffrey, who ran 21-yards for the score.

Jennings became the first wide receiver to throw a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl since Antoine Randle did in Super Bowl XL in 2006 for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

The Chiefs finally got on the board before halftime on a 28-yard Harrison Butker field goal.

Turnovers were the story of the game as both sides committed back-to-back mistakes. Running backs struggle to catch the football.

McCaffrey fumbled on the opening drive of the game. Then, with the Chiefs still scoreless, set up with a promising first-and-goal from the Niners nine-yard line early in the second quarter, running back Isaiah Pacheco knocked the ball away, and the Niners recovered.

The Niners defense confused Mahomes time and time again. He came out after halftime and immediately threw an interception on G'Air Brown.

Midway through the third quarter, Butker broke Moody's record, making a 57-yard field goal of his own to cut the Niners' lead to 10–6.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, Niners' returner Ray-Ray McCloud fumbled a punt, the Chiefs recovered, and on the next play, Mahomes connected with Marquez Valdez-Scandling on a 16-yard touchdown pass. Chiefs lead 13-10.

The Niners responded early in the fourth, with Purdy connecting with Jennings for a six-yard touchdown. But Moody missed the extra point, giving the Niners a 16-13 lead.

Budger's 24-yard field goal tied the game at 16 with less than six minutes left.

However, Moody redeemed himself for his earlier mistake, kicking a 53-yard field goal with less than two minutes left to give the Niners a 19–16 lead.

But as he's done so many times before, Mahomes drove the Chiefs down the field, setting up a 29-yard tying field goal with three seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Super Bowl LI in 2017 was the only Super Bowl to go into overtime when Tom Brady and the New England Patriots rallied from a 28-3 deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28.
