President Joe Biden has dropped out of the US election race and announced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as the Democratic nominee.

With less than a month to go before the Democratic National Convention, when their choice will be confirmed, the decision throws the party into uncharted waters.

Is Biden still the President of the United States?

Yes, he ended his campaign for re-election to the White House on November 5th.

He has vowed to remain president until his successor is formally inaugurated in January.

However, Mr Biden is now facing calls from senior Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, to step down.

Kamala Harris Democratic Presidential Candidate?

There is no guarantee that VP Kamala Harris will simply take Mr Biden’s place as the Democratic nominee for president.

After winning the support of a majority of delegates during recent primaries, Mr Biden was expected to be officially confirmed this summer. Delegates are people chosen to represent their constituency at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), the party’s main nominating event.

Even if Mr. Biden supports Ms. Harris as the Democratic nominee, delegates will have to decide who they support.

However, she was on the same ticket as Mr Biden, and his endorsement made her the most likely to be elected.

The situation is without modern precedent. The last time a sitting US president dropped out of a re-election campaign was Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1968.

Can other candidates come forward and how will the candidate be selected?

As calls for Mr Biden to drop out of the race have grown in recent weeks, several potential alternatives have emerged.

Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic governor of Michigan, has been announced as a candidate, although she has said she would not consider running if Mr Biden steps aside. On Sunday, minutes after Mr Biden’s announcement, he said he would do everything he could to “elect Democrats and stop Donald Trump”.

Some other rumored replacements behind Ms. Harris include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The DNC is scheduled to begin on August 19. If the party doesn’t come together to support a candidate, it could set the stage for an open convention for the first time in decades.

That is, if several candidates emerge, delegates can freely decide which of them to vote for.

Candidates need the signatures of at least 300 delegates — no more than 50 from a state — to have their names appear on the ballot.

The initial round of voting will be among the 3,900 pledged delegates, which include voters loyal to the Democratic Party.

If after this first round no candidate receives a majority of the votes, a further round of voting will take place. These rounds include superdelegates, party leaders and elected officials, who all vote until a candidate is chosen.

A candidate needs 1,976 delegate votes to secure the party nomination.

How does the winning candidate choose their vice chancellor?

CNN reports that it’s a less formal process than selecting a presidential nominee — the person chosen by the candidate is usually accepted as their running mate.

If Ms. Harris takes Mr. Biden’s place on the Democratic ticket, some of the names being discussed as her running mate include some of the prominent Democrats mentioned above, including Mr. Shapiro, as well as Illinois Governor JP Pritzker and the Arizona senator. Mark Kelly.

If he wins the post, his vice chancellor will become his future vice president.

What happens to the money pledged to Biden?

Campaign finance experts have suggested that since Ms Harris was on the same ticket as Mr Biden, almost $100m (£73m) of her fundraising would flow directly to her should she become the Democratic nominee.

It’s “not an open question,” Federal Election Commission Commissioner Tara Lindenbaum told the New York Times. “It’s very clear,” he added.

However, Republicans plan to challenge the financial transfer, pointing out that Mr Biden was not officially his party’s nominee when he dropped out of the White House race.

M.S. It’s unclear what will happen to the funds raised by the Biden-Harris campaign if someone other than Harris becomes the nominee.
