The Green Bay Packers will face the Philadelphia Eagles in their first regular season game in South America this season in a Week 1 matchup in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the NFL announced today.
The game, on Friday, Sept. 6, opens the season for the Packers and marks Green Bay's second international regular-season appearance, following the team's 2022 appearance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
“We are a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in Sao Paulo,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “We are excited to play in front of our dedicated fans in Brazil and help build the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. It was a great experience playing internationally for the first time a few years ago and we are proud to be a part of the league's continued global growth.”
First announced in December, the match will take place at the Corinthians Arena. Hosted both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. It was the first time in more than 50 years (Cardinals at Rams, September 18, 1970) that the NFL played a Friday night game on opening weekend.
“As global growth continues to be an important and strategic priority for the NFL and its 32 clubs, we are excited to host the Green Bay Packers against the Philadelphia Eagles in our first game in South America,” said Gerrit Meyer, NFL. Managing Director and International Head. “With more than 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, Friday night's 2024 regular-season opener in São Paulo will bring incredible energy – marking a historic moment for our sport internationally.”
The matchup will be considered a road game for the Packers since the Eagles were assigned to host the game. Along with the game in South America, the NFL has played a game (preseason or regular season) on five of the seven continents around the world. Prior to the Packers' trip to London in 2022, the team had played internationally on three previous occasions: Toronto in 1997, Tokyo in 1998 and Winnipeg in 2019. The game in Brazil is part of the 2024 NFL International Games. Four games previously announced to take place in Europe. To learn more about NFL International, visit nfl.com/international/.
The rest of the Packers' 2024 schedule will be announced later this spring and will feature nine regular-season home games and one regular-season home game at Lambeau Field.
